What to Expect in San Pedro:
The Barrier Reef off of Belize is the second largest in the world. It is located approximately 1/4 mile from the shore of Ambergris Caye, which makes this little island a diver's paradise. Standing on the beach you can see the line of breaking water, which gives evidence of the reef crest. Here Staghorn and Elkhorn coral can be seen poking out of the surface at low tide. The boats cross through interspersed natural channels in the reef crest to the open water outside where 35 plus local dive sites are located.
The dive sites off Ambergris Caye are typical of a barrier reef-type ecosystem. Once the dive boat is secured to one of the 35 mooring buoys implemented in an effort to avoid anchor damage to the reef, divers enter the water, finding themselves in a gorgonian plain at 40 feet of water. Waving sea fans and sea rods dominate the underwater landscape along with pillar, boulder, and fleshy corals.
A short swim due east of the boat yields the edge of the deep reef which starts at 60 feet and continues down well past 100 feet. The majority of the dive is spent between 60-80 feet, exploring the spur & groove finger canyons, where lobster and Black Drum are found hiding under alcoves. Large groupers hang around goby cleaning stations, spotted eagle rays and turtles make an appearance coming over the lip of the next canyon. Here the boulder corals like the Mountain Star coral change morphology, opting instead for their deep water plate formations to maximize the ambient sunlight that penetrates to this depth. Some of the more adventurous sites are the caverns and tunnels. These are swim throughs, not caves, where divers exit through chimneys or tunnels to find themselves at a different location than where they entered. This should give you some idea of what you can expect to see here in Ambergris Caye.
We are quite fortunate that we are not limited to one type of reef system. Our divers can see both the barrier reef, which has its own distinct topography, as well as the walls offshore at Turneffe and Lighthouse Reef and last but not least the Blue Hole.
Belize houses three of the five atolls in the Caribbean, , 2 of which are accessible from Ambergris Caye. One of these is Lighthouse Reef where the famous Blue Hole is located. This trip is a full day excursion, which departs at 6:00 a.m. and returns at 5:30 p.m. This adventure includes three spectacular dives, the first being the Blue Hole. This is a 1000 foot circular coral reef that drops 400 feet into an incredible cavern filled with stalactites and awe-inspiring natural formations.
The second dive is done at Half Moon Caye Wall where the abundance of marine live is truly something to marvel at. After this dive, a leisurely beach picnic lunch will be served on Half Moon Caye. Half Moon Caye is a sanctuary for Red-footed Booby and Frigate birds. There is an observation tower where it is possible to see all the nesting birds and observe their behavior.
After relaxing on the palm fringed beach you head to your third dive site off of Long Caye called the Aquarium. This completes your day at Lighthouse Reef as you head back to San Pedro. Depending on whether you run into the dolphins or pilot whales, you should be back on the island by 6:00 p.m.
