REPORT #100 August 1999

Produced by the Belize Development Trust

Once upon a time during it's first couple of decades under self-government, the PUP party was known as a party with a conscience, a sense of patriotism, a desire for the best for both the population and nation of Belize.

Not anymore! Since taking office a year ago, the ONE ARMED BANDITS started under the UDP administration have been allowed by the PUP now in office to expand their operations. I'm not privy to all the places you can now do gambling, or there are casinos, or there are one-armed bandits; but certainly reports from San Pedro, Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker and Belize City indicate there is a problem with the growth of gambling addiction.

Back in the "good old days" it was bad enough seeing the port Belize City with it's quota of drunks and panhandlers. Each village also had it's known group of alcoholics. Rum and alcohol shops sometimes outnumbered grocery stores. Nowadays, the scene has been added to, with one armed bandit gambling machines.

Sad to say, there is a percentage of any population that become enslaved via addictive mechanisms of the brain and genes. In Belize, that segment that was originally protected by earlier political party ethics and morals, but no longer is.

The PUP party, I well remember, resisted the enslavement of Belize by Mafia interests from Las Vegas back in the 1970's. They were a stalwart wall against introducing gambling into the country of Belize. Not any more! The good old days are gone for the PUP! Whatever happened to their sense of purpose, the dedication to public service, the well being of the population? I wonder when the PUP lost it's way? What happened to the dreams, the idealism, the initiative? Is it all just GREED and SELF ENRICHMENT now?

SHAME ON THIS GOVERNMENT OF THE PUP! One armed bandits in the villages now. Even Canada had better sense than that. They call this "LEADERSHIP", OR "GOOD MANAGEMENT"! Pshaw! A POX on such "leadership". A curse be upon those responsible, or negligent in their "leadership" duties.

Wee Willie, wish Willie, Wee Willie wee!
Let their a flying carpet be!
May the demons unleashed reverse their path.
Or destroy all those who are blind to their path.

Magi: Raymundo!
