Last week the Guatemalan Legislature voted to permit the U.S.Army to send in about 40 soldiers " advisors?" to assist the Guatemalan Army with chasing supposedly narcotics dealers. They are to join (hic!) Guatemalan narcotics agents with special equipments.
If you believe that, I have another fairy tale for you, about the "Three Bears and Snow White".
Considering that many of the same crowd that ran Guatemala during the infamous genocide, when summary executions by bullet to the back of the head, with your hands wired behind your back and people dropped from helicopter over the Pacific Ocean, whole villages wiped out in massacres. All to the tune of an estimated 300,000 dead, or disappeared, the same crowd a lot of them are still in the government.
The last time the USA got involved with Guatemala in the military operations and the time before that and the time before that, etc., there was an awful lot of sanctioned, encouraged and assisted murder going on by a predatory government. The USA needs to stay out of Guatemala, both with the US Army and with the CIA. That may not be possible, as Guatemala has needed oil fields. US National Interests and all that rot. Whats a few more thousands of dead bodies, support of mafia style governing, against a reliable source of oil? Not much I guess.
What does it mean for Belize? Probably more immigrants crossing the border illegally. Don't you think the USA should pay about a $50,000 USA resettlement orientation placement cost for each Guatemalan refugee entering Belize? What does it mean in Belize Foreign Policy over the next ten years, with the US Army supplying and advising the authorities in Guatemala?
History repeats itself, unfortunately. On the one hand Clinton apologizes to the Guatemalan people for the part the USA played in the last genocide, not the one before that - remember the Arbenz government? Maybe he should just save time and apologize in advance, right now for the next one? Save a lot of grief and agonizing.
