GETTING HERE, GETTING AROUND & GETTING A PLACE TO STAY
Belize is easier to get to than many people think. Travel agents are fast
becoming aware of the mysteries of Belize and as a result, airlines are
opening up more flights. You can fly direct to Belize City from Miami, Los
Angeles, New Orleans or Houston. If you are coming from almost anywhere
else in the United States, Canada or Europe, your travel agent can get you
here easily and economically. Traveling from South America is usual done
via TACA International, and once again can be arranged through your travel
agent.
If you are vacationing in Mexico or somewhere close like Guatemala or Costa
Rica, flight excursions are very economical and easy to arrange. If you
are visiting the very popular vacation destination, Cancun, Mexico, or considering
it as a connection to Central America, it's especially easy to travel to
Belize. From Cancun you'll arrive in Belize City in about one hour and fifteen
minutes by flight. From Belize City there are flights every hour to San
Pedro which take about 15 minutes. If you are not in a hurry or are budget
conscious you could bus from Cancun to Belize City (about $25US and 10 hours).
Flight prices to Cancun vary from point of departure and from high to low
season, but are relatively constant from Cancun to Belize City year round.
Return flights from Cancun to Belize City are under
$200US.
The alternative to travel by air once in Mexico or Central America is travel
by bus. Again, your travel agent will have information on this economical
and easy way to travel.
Once arriving in Belize City, whether at the International or Municipal
airport, or at the bus station, travel through Belize or to the Cayes is
easy. Getting around Belize City or any other hub in Belize can be done
by taxi and there are a lot of them around. Just make sure you get in the
habit of confirming the flat rate before you get in.
Traveling by bus is popular for those on a budget, especially going to or
from Belize. Travel within Belize can be done easily and at a great rate.
Bus schedules and rates can be obtained through Batty Brothers Bus Service
Ltd. at 15 Mosul Street, Belize City, telephone number (011-501) 2-73354/2-77390.
Renting a car is another option. In the interior, your own transportation
allows you to visit wildlife reserves and Mayan ruins sites on your own
agenda and at your own pace. Car rentals can be expensive, especially due
to the hefty damage deposit usually required. Fuel is another source of
expense. Also, some road conditions can be less than great and often rainstorms
can render some roads impassable. Traveling by car, however, is safe and
for those eager to find their own adventure it may be worth considering.

Now that you have arrived in Belize, it's time to make your way east, to
San Pedro on Ambergris Caye. Traveling to any of the Cayes can be done by
sea or by air.
Water Taxi's are available from the mainland. This is the most economical,
but not the fastest mode of transportation. There are several different
operations that provide the service and between them all, scheduled and
unscheduled service is frequent. Water Taxi fares average $10US each way
from Belize City to San Pedro.
Small propeller plane service has also been set up to cover most of Belize.
It is the most popular mode of travel both inland and to the Cayes. Airfare
is competitive and the stiff competition between the main domestic airlines
has created a high level of efficiency. The tiny aircraft arrive on time
and few flights take more than a half an hour. Travel to San Pedro, Ambergris
Caye, can be done through the International or Municipal airport. Return
flights to San Pedro from the International average $84US and return from
the Municipal average $42US. Taxi from downtown Belize City averages $15US
to the International airport, just north of the city and to Municipal airport
between $2.50US and $5US. Flights leave every hour, but reservations are
recommended. Services can be confirmed through either Tropic Air at P.O.
Box 20, San Pedro, Ambergris Caye, telephone number (011-501) 2-45671 and
US reservations number (800) 422-3435/(713) 449-5230, or Island Air at General
Delivery, San Pedro, Ambergris Caye, telephone number (011-501) 02-31140.
While in San Pedro the most popular mode of transportation is by golf cart.
They can be rented by the hour or the day. Bikes can also be rented but
the most common way of getting around is barefoot along the sandy roads
of San Pedro. Water taxis are available for resorts and restaurants on the
northern and southern parts of the island. There are also some vehicles
used generally as taxis taking people from the airport to their accommodations.
Prices vary from one operation to the next, but we would be happy to help
you find the best deal in town.
Now, where do you stay when in San Pedro? So many options We recommend making
reservations in advance, especially during the high season, American Thanksgiving
through Easter. Otherwise you'll often find room at any hotel that suits
your pocket.
