Casa Maya has a series of nature trails on the resort grounds offering interesting and educational walks. Our Orchid Trail features hundreds of orchids, while the Medicine Trail introduces you to many of the herbal plants so effective in traditional Maya medicine remedies. Birdwatching observation points offer convenience to see some of the nearly 300 varieties of birds that live or migrate here.

Thatching has the wonderful ability to cool by a natural refrigerating process. The thatch leaves absorb water when it rains, and the moisture slowly evaporates, lowering the temperature by evaporative cooling. The humidity on the back slope of the Maya Mountains, where we are located, is much less than on the coast, and we are also at a higher elevation, so we don’t use, or even need, fans or air conditioning, as our weather is pleasant and comfortable in the evenings.
CasaMaya is a true jungle lodge, tucked away in a quiet private jungle valley, constructed of jungle materials. The cabanas and buildings are thatched with bay leaf palm and the framework material is an exotic hardwood called milady. All of our building materials were harvested in a sustainable way from the local jungle and constructed by local Maya craftsmen, in the same manner as their ancestors. There are ancient Maya ruins and caves on the resort property.
Our beds had mosquito netting, but it was mostly for psychological support, as we have very few bugs and virtually no mosquitoes, except after prolonged periods of rain, which is rare. Some time ago we screened all our cabanas.
The local caves are homes to millions of bats, which sweep our skies every evening, gathering what mosquitoes and flying insects escaped the night before. The chachalakas, parrots, chickens, brown jays and other birds dine on the bugs, competing with the lizards and frogs, while armadillos and opossum harvest the worms and grubs. It is a great natural balancing system of the upland rainforest jungle and our guests reap the benefits. Although we have a few deer, tayra (bush dog), fox, gibnut and other small animals in the jungle around the resort, you will have to travel into more remote areas to see the large cats, crocodiles, tapir and other rare tropical animals.
While at the resort, you will sleep in the soothing peace of pleasant jungle sounds, and no background noise, 60 cycle hum, horns, sirens, overhead jets screaming, diesel trucks roaring or trains pounding the earth. It is just a nice peaceful tranquility in a lovely cabana with an enchanting glorious world unfolding each morning from your window.
Our thatched cabanas are very spacious with tables, chairs and two double beds. Each cabana has its own private bathroom with a toilet, washbasin and hot water shower. The high thatch roof keeps the air cool during the day and adds to sleeping comfort at night. Our cabanas are located on the hillside above the pavilion offering a lovely view of the resort and the Maya Mountains. Each has a full veranda on all four sides where guests can relax, or lounge in a hammock waiting for toucans or a flock of parrots to fly by.
GUESTHOUSE with family rooms
A comfortable guesthouse is serenely tucked away in the trees below the pavilion. It is organized into four rooms with two beds (3 upon request) in each (newly renovated). There are separate bathrooms for men and women with hot showers. The budget traveler will find these accommodations attractively priced at $35.00 per room per night (plus local tax; 3rd person plus 5 US$ and 4th person plus 5US$). Special group rates are available. The guesthouse is available for student, youth adventure and budget travel groups as well as individual travelers and families.

Casa Maya has an excellent dining room, in fact we think it is one of the best in Belize. Our kitchen offers Belizean foods with a Continental flare, serving fresh seafood, stuffed chicken breasts, rolled pork tenderloin, filet mignon, tasty vegetarian dishes, etc. We feature wholesome unadulterated foods, with no additives, chemicals or other modern-day food enhancements. Wherever possible, all foods used are organically raised either at the resort or in the local area. We have our own chickens to lay real eggs, not the chemically constituted ones like those from the mass producers. Meals are designed to be a culinary delight with special sauces and fresh herbs grown in our gardens. Fruits and vegetables are picked when they are ready and ripe (instead of hard and green so they ship better). Meats are grown without steroids, enzymes and growth enhancing chemicals. Our guests will find that the food tastes delightfully different too
Our bar is located next to the dining room, offering comfortable relaxation with full bar service.
Our Orchid Trail has around a thousand orchid plants with over 100 varieties. These include most of the many varieties of orchids and bromeliads found in Belize, grow in the hills and river valleys of the Cayo District. Unfortunately it has not been maintained before we bought Casa Maya, but we’re on the way to re-create the orchid trail.
A fascinating Medicine Trail winds through Casa Maya introducing guests to the captivating world of rainforest healing herbs and medicines. Special seminars and programs are arranged for groups who wish to learn the use of jungle medicine from Mayan Healers. The medicine trail has not been maintained either. We’re actually recreating. All those Maya healing plants are still on the property.

Adventure Trips
Casa Maya offers an intriguing variety of Day Adventure Trips which are interesting for anyone who would like to see the natural beauty sites in the Maya Mountains, and Belize rivers, caves and jungles.
High Adventure Treks
You can explore the sacred magical caves with their haunting Maya sacrificial artifacts, or take a jungle canoe trip to count crocodiles, iguanas, giant storks, howler monkeys and slithering jungle creatures. Overnight campouts are an exciting opportunity to experience the jungle at night.
Environmental Tours
Environmental educational adventure trips take you into deep wilderness areas to see lowland and upland jungles, remote rivers, mysterious caves, rare rainforest environments, and the cloud forests of the Maya Mountains.
Jungle Survival Courses
A week long course is designed to develop self reliance through critical decision making, teach survival techniques that may be useful in all aspects of one's life, demonstrate the delicate and fragile balance of our tropical eco systems, and illustrate the beauty of the fauna and flora of the unique Belize tropical rainforest environments.
Archaeology
Tikal, Caracol, El Pilar and Xunantunich, amongst the most significant Mayan ruins in Central America, are within easy adventure distance of Casa Maya. Many visitors want to see all of the Mayan ruins, truly an impossible task as there are hundreds of them. However, we do trips to many unknown and seldom visited sites.
Birdwatching
Belize is a birdwatchers paradise. Our guests have counted well over 200 species of birds while staying at Casa Maya, including rare and endangered Scarlet Macaw, Ocellated Turkey, Keel - billed Toucans, Collared Aracuri, Jabirui Stork, Whistling Duck, and Blue Crowned Motmot, to name a few.
Traditional Maya Medicine Seminars
Week long courses in Traditional Maya Medicine are organized for groups. Maya Healers instruct on identification of useful herbs, preparation of herbal remedies, and philosophy of Maya healing. Guests are transported in comfortable vans for field trips and supervised by well - known healers.

For example, our Orchid Trail has nearly a thousand orchid plants for you to see as you stroll through the jungle, but if each visitor takes one, how long will it be before they become rare? Every pottery shard, arrowhead and artifact that leaves in someone’s pocket is valuable knowledge lost. Break off a chunk of lovely cave dripstone and you destroy a few thousand years of nature's work. There are deer, agouti, ocelot, jaguar, tapir, peccary, warrie, gibnut, crocodiles, and an endless variety of jungle animals to see, but if they are hunted and killed, the National Zoo will become the only major adventure trip in Belize. Our guides will take you to mysterious and hidden places very few people ever see, but we ask you to help us protect these unique sites by not divulging their locations to others and by leaving everything as it was when you arrived, thus your children and future generations will be able to enjoy them as much as you did. Belize is special, but very fragile.

The work of the great Maya traditional healer, Don Elijio Panti, who recently died at 105 years old, helped make the world aware of the wonders of Maya traditional bush medicine, an effective natural method of healing, where a trained healer uses natural herbs and remedies to help the body heal itself, and return to natural balance. It is easy to get confused with what appears to be a wide selection of natural cures, with labels like jungle medicine, rainforest remedies, herbal healing, bush medicine and others, but basically most refer to the same system of healing, perfected through many centuries of practice in Maya world of Central America. Belize is the very heart of the Maya healers world
Maya traditional medicine is actually a very sophisticated medical practice. Maya traditional healers study throughout their life working to be more effective in bringing the total human into harmony with body, environment and spirit. Maya healing shuns the technology and chemicals, the detached involvement of so-called "Western Medicine," where lab tests and computers diagnose the ill, chemicals are prescribed ("take two pills a day and make another appointment if the pain doesn't stop"), and the doctor slips out the back door to go golfing having no knowledge of any of his patients other than the name of their insurance company. Maya traditional healing is involved healing, with a full awareness that the body, mind, emotions, environment and spirit are interconnected, all of which must be considered for an effective cure. It is healing with a heart. A good bush doctor will always take time to learn about his patient as a person, knowing that a good remedy must be in harmony with one's lifestyle
Modern western medicine has made great strides in devising chemicals and drugs to bring cures and relief, and in recent years the pharmaceutical companies have launched extensive campaigns to identify the "active ingredients" of the jungle herbal cures used by our bush doctors. Experience has shown, however, that such synthesized active ingredients are not always effective when isolated from the Maya healers consortium of ingredients
Belize, home to many highly qualified Maya healers, many of whom are descendents or students of Don Elijio Panti, is a treasure trove of healing herbs, with literally thousands of useful plants growing in the wild. Surrounded by this wonderful pharmacopoeia, ancient healers experimented and developed effective natural healing methods that were refined through the centuries. Traditional healing has not only survived the ridicule of modern western medicine, it is now experiencing a renaissance and new respectability, as the amazing effectiveness of herbal cures is becoming better known
Belize is the heart of Maya Traditional Healing. At Casa Maya, we organize lectures, classes, seminars and workshops for individuals or groups. We have our own Medicinal Trail on the resort grounds, with hundreds of medicinal plants in their natural surrounding (actually re-organizing the medicine trail). Our programs are guided by well-known healers, and our facilities include lecture areas, full facilities for the preparation of herbal remedies, and comfortable vans for field trips. Our workshops include lectures by Maya healers, identification of medicinal plants, collection, preparation and use of remedies. These packages include transportation to and from Belize City International Airport to Casa Maya Resort, return flight from and to Belize City to San Pedro, accomodation in one of the beautiful cabanas of Casa Maya Resort and Salamander Hideaway Resort, full meal plan in both resorts, a welcome cocktail in both resorts, a half day excursion to Xunantunich, a stop at Belize Zoo if time is available and all taxes.
RESERVATION POLICY: A non-refundable deposit of 50% per person is required to hold space on all packages. No space will be held without receipt of deposit. Full pre-payment is due at Casa Maya 90 days prior to arrival.
CANCELLATION POLICY: All cancellations must be received in writing prior to 90 days 100% of deposit may be transferred to another date. Between 45 - 90 days 50% of package may be transferred to another date. Less than 45 days may not be transferred or refunded. All cancellations have a $100 processing fee per guest.
