Details for the upcoming Costa Maya Festival 2002 are falling into place and exciting news has been confirmed. At the last meeting, it was revealed that Charlie Masso, an ex-Menudo and soap opera star, will be co-conducting the Reina de la Costa Maya Pageant. This popular artist recently launched a new album entitled "Tributo al Principe" and can be seen on the soap opera "Gata Salvaje". Joining Mr. Masso will be Miss Costa Maya 2000 Sandra Glower of El Salvador and Miss Costa Maya Belize 2001 Melina Diaz.
Also confirmed for the pageant is the participation of the current Miss Belize Karen Russell as our country's representative for this year's Costa Maya Pageant. Also announced is the participation of twenty year-old Pamela Portillo representing El Salvador. Miss Portillo is presently a student at Dr. JosČ Matias Delgado University, and works as a model.
This year's festival will be held August 15th - 18th and will combine the talent and cultures of the five participating Mundo Maya countries. As previously announced in The San Pedro Sun, Maribel Guardia and her band of Mariachis will be the feature entertainment for Saturday, August 17th - International Night. Belize's music sensation Santino's Messengers has agreed to perform. Also scheduled are the popular games and mechanical rides, as well as other entertainers who will be announced as this information becomes available.
So far, the committee has secured the following sponsors but more are needed. Diamond - Cuello's Distillery, Ramon's Village Resort and San Pedro Town Council. Platinum - Estereo Amor, Mash Co. Ltd. (Krystal Shipping) and Reef Radio. Gold - The San Pedro Sun and Ambergris Today. Bronze - Amigos del Mar Dive Shop, Angelus Press, Moon Dancer Boutique, Venus Swimwear and Sol Caribe Tours. Restaurants - Blue Water Grill, Celi's, Caliente, Mickey's Place, Fido's Courtyard, Fantasy Garden and Rico's Restaurant.
