In order to respond to any emergency, the San Pedro Police Department, Fire Department and the Ambergris Caye Emergency Rescue Response Team must know the exact location of the incident. However, figuring out street names is nothing compared to finding out exactly where on North Ambergris Caye the emergency is taking place. An effort by resident Cullen Walker and assistance by the North Ambergris Caye Neighborhood Watch, the north side of the island now has mile markers to make pinpointing the exact location a lot easier. Speaking to The San Pedro Sun, Walker commented that the markers begin from Coco Loco’s and extend to Belizean Coves. The markers are placed on every half mile interval along the four and a half mile stretch. The San Pedro Police Department also boasts a new Global Positioning System (GPS) device which will further aid the department’s quick response. According to Walker, some of the various resorts on North Ambergris Caye have their coordinates already tagged on the GPS. If the mile markers work and the public and various departments find it a useful instrument, Walker states that more permanent markers will be placed. “My wife and I are always looking for ways to get involved in the community and this was a perfect way to do it,” ended Walker.
